Radio Needs to Be "Bold And Aggressive"

Those were the words of Isabella Sanchez (pictured) from the Radio Ink Hispanic Radio Conference addressing the age old question of why radio seems to collect bread crumbs compared to the truckloads of revenue poured into TV. Sanchez is the Vice President of Media Integration at the advertising agency Zubi and was part of an advertiser panel moderated by McGavren Guild Media Director of Sales Jason Gueits. Sanchez said, for radio it's all about the research. "TV has Nielsen. That type of research isn't seen in radio. That's necessary.

Hispanic Group Heads Talk Arbitron, Nielsen

During a super session at the Radio Ink Hispanic Radio Conference, the first question four of Hispanic Radio's biggest executives was asked had to do with Nielsen's acquisition of Arbitron. Adelante CEO Jay Meyers said, "There's no place to go but up. I'm looking forward to it. Arbitron does not reach Spanish speaking Hispanics. The census tells us that the average age is 23...Arbitron says 41. There's a great deal of disconnect."

Automotive Weakens Q1 Radio Revenue

It's always been radio's slowest revenue quarter, and 2013 was no different. Keeping in line with what many of the major radio companies reported in their quarterly earnings, radio took in $3.5 billion in January through March, with March providing something of a revenue spark after a slower start.

(MANAGEMENT) An Industry Of Penguins

(By Marc Morgan) "I can only worry about the things I can control." I have been a subscriber to this school of thought for a long time. It's been especially effective in the last several years in the radio industry, where growth has been dismal at best and competitive threats abound. The essence of this concept is that old, trusted, and possibly overused word: focus.

(SOCIAL) Using Social If You Were Local Radio!

(By Loyd Ford) Radio, in some corners of our industry, seems to be confused about social media. However, radio is the original modern social media and you can prove this to yourself in only a few seconds. If you think it, radio has always connected local groups and brought communities together by helping local listeners and local advertisers. We haven't just broadcast to local communities.

Sports is an $800 Million Business

That number comes from Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey, speaking at the Radio Ink Sports Conference on Wednesday. That's a figure significantly higher than any number that has ever been publicly stated by a radio executive. Most have been calling sports a $150 million business for radio. Dickey says $200 million is going to the networks and $600 million is being brought in by local stations. Dickey says the number one reason advertisers are flocking to sports is engagement. "Advertisers can't find enough content like this. It's a safe harbor."
