September 2005 Radio Revenues
Radio revenue continued to surge upward in September, with particularly noticeable growth in national dollars which rose by 4% over the same month from a year ago.  Local revenue also increased by 1% this September, compared with last September.  The combined total local and national ad sales revenue grew 2% this September over September 2004.  Non-spot revenue swelled 4% this month over the same month from last year.  Grand total combined spot and non-spot dollars climbed 2% in September 2005 over September 2004.

Radio also posted positive gains for the 3rd Quarter of 2005, in spite of the slow start to the quarter in July.  For the three months of 3rd Quarter 2005, local ad dollars grew 1% compared with the same quarter from a year ago.  National ad sales remained flat for the 3rd Quarter when compared with those same three months from 2004.  Total combined local and national revenue for 3rd Quarter 2005 rose by 1% compared with 3rd Quarter of 2004.

On a year-to-date basis, Radio revenues for the first nine months of the year were similar to the results for 3rd Quarter.  Local business grew 1% January through September of 2005 compared to January through September of 2004.  National ad sales rose 1% for the first nine months of 2005 compared with the same time period from a year ago.  Total combined local and national ad dollars increased 1% January through September 2005 over January through September 2004.  Non-spot revenue remained flat for the first nine months of 2005, compared with the first nine months of 2004.  Grand total combined spot and non-spot sales climbed 1% January through September of this year, compared with those same months from last year.

To put the intermediate and long-term growth of the Radio industry into proper perspective, the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) introduced an Ad Sales Index that equates base year 1998 to 100.  The Index works similar to the Consumer Price Index so that information can be monitored on a monthly basis.

The RAB sales indexes for the month of September 2005 are: local, 139.9; national, 149.4; total combined local and national, 142.3.  The indexes for year-to-date 2005 are: local, 141.4; national, 143.1; and total combined local and national, 141.6.

These monthly totals are based on the RAB Radio Revenue Index of more than 150 markets.  The accounting firm of Miller, Kaplan, Arase & Co. provides the local and national revenue data on the more than 150 markets RAB uses to calculate its Revenue Index.  Non-Spot data has been collected and audited since January 2002, and reported since September 2004.
