Some Spanish-language radio stations seem to think that English is the new Spanish. I am not sure what makes radio programmers add English-language songs into their playlists.

As we head into the scorching heat of summer, it is not only the outside temperature that is on the rise. Tempers now seem to be breaking records with both Spanish-language radio broadcasters and their friends at Arbitron. I am a big believer that it is never a good idea when you need government to help you solve your problems; it is even a lousier idea when it is the FCC.

On the one hand, and as always, time seems to be flying. But on the other hand, it sure seems like 2008 is not moving out fast enough.

I can clearly hear his voice -- "Una estacion de Raul Alarcon," a Raul Alarcon station. It really loses its touch and power in the translation. It was his signature tagline, and it ran on all his stations.

As I traveled throughout the country over the last few months, one theme came across loud and clear: The political dollars for Spanish-language radio have not materialized as many had projected and predicted.

As reported recently: The Federation for American Immigration Reform Congressional Task Force said it has 20 talk hosts confirmed and expects 50 to 75 more to sign up for its 2008 Radio Row "Hold Their Feet to the Fire" event in Washington, DC. Last year's event attracted 37 talk hosts, including KOGO-AM/San Diego's Roger Hedgecock, broadcasting from a single location to oppose what FAIRCTF calls an "amnesty agenda" for illegal immigrants.

A typical South Florida summer day marked the opening day of the second annual Radio Ink Hispanic Radio Conference. Sunny, then rain, then sunny, just the way we like it. And the content of the conference was just the way the Spanish-language radio industry needed it.

The Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies is forming an advisory council to explore the issues and opportunities surrounding Arbitron's Portable People Meter.

Yesterday the entire country celebrated Cinco de Mayo. As a matter of fact, it was celebrated all weekend long at outdoor festivals, restaurants, bars, and clubs. Incredibly, it is not a date that is celebrated in Mexico with much, if any, fanfare at all.

I am always amused by the guessing game that takes place at the end of every quarter. Of course, because of the obvious economic conditions this year, it will be much easier to be right about revenues and earnings being off. And, for the first time in a long time, I believe that the Spanish-language broadcasters will be in the same boat.

If you have not taken a moment to go through the list of this year's nominees for the Medallas de Cortez, you really should. The list is as impressive in depth of professionals as it is in the quality of very deserving individuals who are passionate about the Hispanic radio industry.

I can still remember when ratings for Spanish-language television were put out by Strategy Research Corp. Dick Tobin, who founded SRC and whom many of us consider to be the father of Spanish-language television ratings and Hispanic market research, was a true pioneer.

"It can't be done." How many times have we heard that over the ages? This last time, it was in reference to the merger between Sirius and XM. Terrestrial broadcasters have fought the merger every step of the way, and, if history serves me right, they will continue to fight to preserve the only world they know.

It is hard to believe how fast time flies. My children are now 20, 17, 10, and 7, and it seems like only yesterday that I couldn't wait for them to take their first steps. It is with that same lightning speed that a year has passed since ABC Radio en Español launched the Conexion Thalia radio show.

Much has been said and written over the last few days about Spanish Broadcasting System and its Chairman, President, and CEO, Raul Alarcon Jr. Headlines predicting the demise of SBS have been written by those who do not know Alarcon or his management style.

Last Thursday I was invited to speak at the 39th annual Country Radio Seminar, better known as CRS. Andy Denemark from United Stations Radio Networks had extended an invite a few months before to speak to the group about the U.S. Hispanic market. I was intrigued by the request. Where was the connection for Country radio stations with our growing Latino population?

It was not that long ago that the concept of Spanish-language network radio was foreign to every Spanish-language ad shop, let alone the general-market shops. "Radio is local, television is national," we were told, time and time again.

With more than 730 Spanish-language radio stations across the country, featuring 14 formats, there will be no shortage of material to write about. One beauty of Spanish-language radio, as opposed to Spanish-language television, is that it is truly competitive. The Hispanic market is full of trenches where battles take place, mano a mano.
