Radio Ink Presents Forecast 2010

Mason To Deliver Opening Address At Forecast '10

CBS Radio President/CEO Dan Mason will deliver an opening address on the state of the radio industry at Radio Ink's Forecast 2010, set for December 8 at the Harvard Club in New York.

This will be a great opportunity to hear Mason, one of the most respected, forward-thinking figures in the industry, speak candidly about what he sees facing radio in 2010 and beyond.

Mason, a 30-plus-year industry vet who's in his second stint heading up CBS Radio, oversees 134 stations and the group's thriving digital initiatives. His take on the state of radio will open what's sure to be an intense and thought-provoking summit.

Huckabee To Keynote Radio Ink's Forecast '10

Radio Ink is pleased to announced that former Arkansas Governor and current "Huckabee Report" host Mike Huckabee will deliver a keynote address at Forecast 2010.

Huckabee, who is also a commentator for Fox News, is a sought-after speaker who is sure to have a great deal to say about the role of media in public life and the future of the radio industry.

"Governor Huckabee brings a refreshing insight to any discussion, and we look forward to having him keynote at Forecast '10," said Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads. "His experience as a governor, political commentator, and author should provide fascinating perspective in these challenging times."

Huckabee, who led Arkansas from 1996-2007, sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, making a strong showing before bowing out to support John McCain. And he's still active in politics, with his HuckPac political action committee.

Huckabee's known as a passionate political commentator, and has said his early experience as a Baptist pastor has given him a deep awareness of the problems faced by individuals and families. He has stirred debate regularly on everything from immigration to religion to weight loss.

Huckabee is also the author of six books, most recently the best-selling Do the Right Thing. And he's involved in new media, with an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.

Bill Burton to Receive Radio Ink's Lifetime Leadership Award at Forecast '10

Radio advertising legend Bill Burton will be this year's recipient of the Radio Ink Lifetime Leadership Award. Burton is President/COO of the Detroit Radio Advertising Group, and -- with his trademark words "Be fabulous!" -- he's also one of radio's greatest advocates.

The award will be presented at Radio Ink's Forecast '10, to be held in December at New York's Harvard Club. Click "Agenda" to the left to see the most up-to-date info on the Forecast '10 agenda and speakers.

Report From Forecast '09

The mood at Radio Ink’s Forecast ’09 summit, held December 2 in New York, was serious, as one would expect in these tumultuous times, but very far from grim. The daylong gathering was packed with industry leaders and experts, both on the panels and in the crowd, and the palpable intensity had everything to do with a determination to adapt, survive, and grow into the future.

Morning in America host Bill Bennett gave the first keynote address, saying that “there are few institutions more democratic than talk radio.” He said it’s critical for those who hold opposing viewpoints to find common ground where they can and urged talk radio to help “calm the waters” with conversation rather than confrontation.

Talk Radio Network host Monica Crowley’s lunchtime one-on-one with U.S.News & World Report publisher and entrepreneur Mort Zuckerman focused on the current financial crises. Zuckerman pointed to an “explosion of debt” among consumers and the financial sector, along with a lack of realism and foresight on the financial side, and said he expects the recession to continue for at least another two years.

The theme of the ad-agency panel, moderated by Norstar Media Entertainment Managing Director/CEO Laurence Norjean, was the need for radio to respond and adapt to change, particularly as digital media’s dominance grows. GroupM CEO Irwin Gotlieb stated the real challenge: “How does a medium like radio evolve over the course of the next few years from what it is today to what it needs to be three to five years from today?”

Fellow panelist Page Thompson, CEO of OMDNorth America, said,“We’re sitting at a point in our industry that we have to redefine ourselves,” while ZenithOptimedia President/Strategic Resources Bruce Goerlich said radio must refocus on its clients and its consumers. He asked, “Can I find that intersection between what I can offer, what consumers are getting out of my medium, and what advertisers need?”

Later, Richard Foreman, head of Richard Foreman & Associates and a member of the board of the Broadcasters Foundation, presented Radio Ink’s Lifetime Leadership Award to former Broadcasters Foundation President Gordon Hastings, with a touching tribute that cited Hastings’ 53 years of service to and leadership in the industry.

The buzz continued at the Top 40 reception and cocktail party, honoring the year’s 40 Most Powerful People in Radio, with attendees chatting most about the “Leadership Speak-Out” panel of top execs from six major companies, and the independents’ panel, where heads of some smaller broadcasters talked about the challenges and success stories in their part of the industry.

The panel will be moderated by Norstar Media Entertainment Managing Director/CEO Laurence Norjean, and it's an unprecedented gathering of top agency minds who'll share their perceptions of radio -- what works, what doesn't, and how to earn their business in 2009. Crowley, Zuckerman Go One-On-One At Forecast '09

In these days of what some say is unprecedented economic turmoil in the U.S., Radio Ink's Forecast '09, set for December 2 in New York, will present a special one-on-one conversation between Talk Radio Network host Monica Crowley and Mort Zuckerman, owner and publisher of the New York Daily News and influential news magazine U.S. News & World Report.

Zuckerman, one of America's most successful businessmen, co-founded and serves as Chairman of Boston Properties and has substantial real estate holdings in Boston, New York, Washington, and San Francisco. He's owned U.S. News & World Report since 1984, putting his distinctive stamp on the venerable (founded in 1933) news weekly, and has owned the New York Daily News since 1993. Zuckerman's become known for his detailed analyses and tough commentary in the pages of U.S. News & World Report, and he'll be sure to have a unique and no-holds-barred take on the economy, the results of the November elections, and much more.

Crowley's energetic and original approach to conservative talk has made her a rising star. She began her radio career as a frequent guest with Batchelor & Alexander on WABC/New York, arriving with impressive political credentials, including four years as a foreign policy consultant for former President Nixon. She got her own show on WABC in 2002, and The Monica Crowley Show is now nationally syndicated via TRN.

Crowley is also a respected author and political commentator who has been heard from in such diverse forums as Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, and MSNBC. She's been a news analyst on Fox News Channel since its founding in 1996 and also serves as a regular panelist on PBS and NBC's The McLaughlin Group.

Crowley's approach to the issues is fearless, informed, and direct, and she'll be bringing that approach to what's sure to be a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation with the equally opinionated Zuckerman.

Radio Ink's Forecast '09, the industry's only exclusively financially focused event, is set for December 2, 2008, at New York's beautiful Harvard Club. Registration also includes an invitation to the exclusive "Top 40" reception, honoring the most influential people in the radio industry.

Bill Bennett To Keynote Forecast '09

Morning in America host Bill Bennett will keynote Radio Ink's Forecast '09, set for December 2 at New York's beautiful Harvard Club.

Bennett has been a figure in American media, politics, and education for decades, and is well known as a spokesman for conservative values. His impressive resume includes terms as a professor teaching at Boston University, the University of Texas, and Harvard, and stints as Secretary of Education under President Reagan and as cabinet-level "drug czar" under President George W. Bush. He is the best-selling author of 18 books, including, most recently, the two-volume America: The Last Best Hope.

Though he's a Republican, Bennett has put common cause and cooperation first and worked with Democratic leaders such as Sen. Joe Lieberman to fight the decline of popular culture and to work to end religious persecution worldwide. He's also a candid and dynamic speaker who is sure to bring excitement and a distinct point of view to this edition of Radio Ink's signature Forecast event, leaving even those who may disagree with his take with plenty to think about and talk about.

"We're always looking to bring a national perspective to our Forecast conference," said Radio Ink Publisher B. Eric Rhoads. "We invited Bill Bennett because of his insider's perspective on Washington, since our conference falls a month after the election. Though a conservative, Bennett is known for his balanced commentary and credibility with both sides of the aisle. We're honored to have him at Forecast."

Along with his work in the media, Bennett is the Washington Fellow of the Claremont Institute, where he chairs Americans for Victory over Terrorism, which works to strengthen public opinion during the ongoing war on terrorism.

Radio Ink's Forecast is radio's only exclusively focused financial conference, bringing radio owners, CFOs, group executive and managers, and Wall Street analysts to New York to discuss trends and opportunities and the information behind the numbers. Co-chairing Forecast '09 are Emmis Communications Chairman/CEO/President Jeff Smulyan and Deutsche Bank Securities Chairman/Media & Telecom Banking Drew Marcus.

Forecast '09 is limited to 200 attendees and includes admission to the exclusive "Top 40" reception, honoring the most influential people in the radio industry. Click here for an up-to-date agenda, and click here to register.
