Meet The New Guy Running The Conclave
It was announced yesterday that Bob Shannon would be taking over at The Conclave for Tom Kay. Kay is the only Executive Director The Conclave has ever had and he'll consult the organization through the transition. Shannon has a consulting company called bobshannonworks, he's the President of SpotMedia Services, and a former executive at TM Century. He's also written a book called "Turn It Up! American Radio Tales 1946-1996." We caught up with Shannon and asked him about where he'll take The Conclave in the future.
How do you follow someone who'd been at the helm for 37 years?
With respect and the knowledge that my tenure, no matter how good a job I do, will never match his.
What is your vision for the Conclave?
I begin with Tom's vision of this being a learning conference, where a gathering of the best and brightest in media, not just radio, come together to share ideas that appreciate the past and plan for the future. If someone attending the 2013 Conference walks away with one idea that will make their job more secure and their future brighter and more exciting, we will have accomplished something that matters.
What are some things you would like to incorporate right away?
I have a long laundry list, but with only eight hours on the job I'm still sorting things out. Get back to me in about 30 days, okay?
The programming side of the business has been taking a beating lately with cutbacks. What are your thoughts on that?
The dreamer in me wishes it weren't so, but the realist in me saw it coming years ago when we began consolidating. And, of course, it's not just radio, it's every industry. Like all things in life, the strong will survive. My mantra is fail as quickly as you can and then try the next thing.
What is the general feeling about radio you are hearing from people on the programming side?
There's not one answer. Those who cling to the past are upset and long for the good old days. But, those who embrace the future -- and by this I mean all of the opportunities and avenues that exist for creating and delivering content -- are enthusiastic. Change is never easy.
