I was fortunate to work with Paul Wilson. He was the best Program Director I ever worked for. Corporate radio's loss is the public's gain. Good luck Paul. You are the best....even if you wrecked the engineering truck. :-)
Congrats to this young couple. Considering the amount of work required and that, for them, six o'clock does come twice a day, I got tired just reading and listening. (Love the Tunes.)
Go for it Paul Wilson! I’ll be your biggest fan. In 2001, I was told by the big company that bought the station I had devoted 13 years and 11 months of my life to “your services are no longer needed”. I experienced the “big company” philosophy of only interested in making money, not serving the community. The announcers were no longer valued and the salespeople were just a means to make more money. I bought my own station because I thought I could do radio better than they were doing it. I’ve had fun on the radio ever since. We serve the community 24/7, promote local, local, local and make a dollar (or more!) every month! Our people are our biggest assets. We need more broadcasters back in broadcasting. Good luck Paul.
The big boys have sucked the life blood out of radio. Only as real radio people get into the business for the joy of radio rather than the love of money will radio be able to recover. There's no problem with radio; it's the big lovers of money who are causing the problem. There's no common sense in Washington. We should return to the old 7am, 7fm, and 7tv rule; then there would be opportunities for real radio. The fat cats have had it too long! Go buy a radio station today and join the fun.
Here's to you, buddy!!!!
In Dec. 2007, I purchased my own station, WLSC Loris, SC (25 miles from Myrtle Beach, SC). My first 4 years as an owner have been the last 4 years (yuck!), but we should turn a profit this year. Now, it's me that's not paying me as much as I'm worth.
Local, local, local is the key, but make sure your local, local, local is growing. You can't sell ads to empty buildings and radio is no different that any other business, you gotta have sales to survive. Better put some digital in your game, too and cut those expenses. I've made a ton of mistakes, but I've learned from them. I've managed to survive the last 4 years.
