(06/19/02) WMAL Wins Edward R. Murrow Award The Radio-Television News Directors Association has given its highest honor, the 2002 Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence, to Newstalk 630 WMAL in Washington, DC. In addition, WMAL was honored with the "Best Use of Sound" Murrow for "Cal's Last Game". Both awards will be formally presented during a ceremony at New York's Museum of Broadcasting in October. WMAL's award for Overall Excellence represents the best efforts of WMAL's news and programming team during the worst tragedy in America's history. "We are humbled to receive this honor in the wake of September 11th," says WMAL News Director John Matthews. "On that tragic day, we were not thinking about winning any awards. We were just trying to get our listeners the latest news on the attacks at the Pentagon and in New York as accurately and as quickly as possible. However, I cannot express strongly enough the pride I feel in the reporters, anchors, show hosts, producers and support staff at WMAL. This is truly a team honor." Other stories covered in WMAL's winning entry included coverage of the anthrax scare, the Bush Inauguration, the Chandra Levy/Gary Condit investigation, the College Park tornado and the University of Maryland basketball team's 2001 run to the Final Four. Nominees for the awards included KCBS in San Francisco, WINS in New York, WSB in Atlanta and KMOX in St. Louis among others. WMAL's other National Murrow winner, "Cal's Last Game", is a four-minute montage that soaked up the atmosphere around Camden Yards on the last night of Cal Ripken's career. WMAL Managing Editor Scott Wykoff scoured the ballpark with his microphone, recording bits of natural sound and using his editing skills to present a story that was told without the benefit of a reporter's description. The Radio-Television News Directors Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.
