(06/03/02) Viacom Stations Combine News Resources for Broadcast TV Three Viacom stations in Philadelphia — WPSG-TV (UPN57), KYW Newsradio 1060 and KYW-TV — will combine their vast news-gathering resources in the market to produce Philadelphia's first headline news service this fall, the stations have announced. KYW Newsradio This Morning —a television news service incorporating the day's top stories, sports scores, weather and traffic along with business news from CBS MarketWatch — will debut on WPSG-TV (UPN57) in Philadelphia on Tuesday, September 3. Each 10-minute segment of the service will provide viewers with an overall view of the news of the day. A news crawl and weather forecast information will be visible on the screen at all times. KYW Newsradio, Philadelphia's premiere radio news source and the market's highest rated radio station, will produce the news service, which will run continuously from 5 to 8 a.m. on UPN57. The award-winning staff of KYW Newsradio will do the reporting and anchoring for the service, which will also feature video and reporting from KYW-TV's Eyewitness News. "We're pleased to offer Philadelphia viewers a new and unique quick summary of their local news headlines in the morning," says UPN57 Vice President and General Manager Kevin O'Kane. "In doing so, for the first time UPN57 will be able to offer expanded news programming as well as provide cross-promotion for our sister stations' news products, KYW Newsradio and KYW-TV's Eyewitness News." KYW Newsradio Vice President and General Manager Roy Shapiro sees the news service as an extension of the No. 1 all-news station's brand. "Our name is synonymous with news in Philadelphia. This helps us continue to reinforce that strength." For KYW-TV, which will provide the video and other news-gathering resources for the new product, the news service holds cross-promotional opportunities as well. "This will work particularly well on breaking news stories," says Vice President and General Manager Marcellus Alexander, "where viewers and listeners will be able to follow developments throughout the day on KYW-TV and KYW Newsradio." According to Viacom television station Group President Fred Reynolds, "This effort is a good example of the many opportunities we are creating in our duopoly markets. It's a positive addition for all parties — the viewers, the advertisers and the stations. The prospects for this type of joint effort in our duopoly markets are limitless."
