(9/21/2001) Howard Stern To Raise Money For Heroes In New York City. Asks Listeners To Contribute $5.
We're about to see just how loyal Radio listeners are to the shock jock. At any time, Stern could have approximately 10 million listeners, sometimes more. He has asked them all to contribute just $5. He has set up an 800 number to collect the contributions for the rescue workers in Manhattan.

"We'll collect the money and turn it over to New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani," Stern said on the air this morning. "We want these rescue workers driving yachts. There are pregnant women whose husbands walked into that building and never returned. We can help them pay their rent."

Stern said he didn't want to make this into a telethon, but he did want to help. The number Stern has set up is 877-280-9200.
