(8/2/2001) WEVD Employees To Be Let Go As ABC Takes Over The Signal To Broadcast ESPN Radio.
WEVD is owned by The Forward Association, the owner of the Forward family of newspapers. As the station changes hands, over to ABC, the current employees of the operation are being let go.

This statement from the website - www.forward.com - comes from Harold Ostroff, chairman of the subsidiary that publishes the English Forward and former chief executive of the Association.

"Our radio employees, under the leadership of Tom Bird, WEVD's general manager, have been devoted and loyal professionals and we do not doubt that their skills will be put to productive use elsewhere in the radio industry. The changes now to be made reflect no lack of gratitude by the Forward Association for their outstanding performance over the years," Mr. Ostroff continued. "For those employees who will not be needed under the new arrangements with ABC, severance provisions will be made to help tide them over. We also will miss our loyal listeners, as they will miss our programming. We are hopeful that other radio stations in the market will look carefully at the current WEVD programming and employees and provide outlets for that kind of program service. Unfortunately, the unique opportunity now available to us to assure the future of our newspapers could not be achieved in any other way."
