McConnell Leaving ABC Radio Networks
NEW YORK -- October 23, 2008: ABC Radio Networks SVP/Programming John McConnell is leaving the network, with Friday his last day. McConnell oversees ABC Music Radio and ABC Talk Radio and, until 2006, headed programming for ESPN Radio as well.
McConnell, who joined ABC News as VP/Radio in 1993 after a stint as News Director for KGO/San Francisco, moved into his most recent post in 2001. He's been behind such successful shows as The Sean Hannity Show, Paul Harvey's News and Comment, Michael Baisden, and the Kix Brooks-hosted All American Country Countdown. He also created and oversees ABC Radio's satellite business -- until 2007 the largest provider of programming to XM and Sirius.
McConnell also notably came back after a disastrous bike accident to run in the New York City Marathon, a year to the day after the crash that fractured two bones in his neck. He entered the race through the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to raise funds, and he is now the co-chair of the foundation's national leadership committee.
No firm word on McConnell's plans, but he says he has a few things in the works.
