FCC Considers HD Radio, Sirius XM-Compatible Receivers

WASHINGTON -- August 26, 2008: The FCC has issued a Notice of Inquiry on whether to require Sirius XM receivers to incorporate HD Radio technology and in turn require HD Radio receivers to include capabilities to carry satellite signals.

Among the issues the FCC is seeking comment on are the effect of any receiver requirements on the development of HD Radio, the impact on the cost and performance of these new satellite receivers, and establishing an appropriate timeframe for compliance. The Commission is also studying the impact of such a requirement on competition between HD Radio, satellite services and other audio technologies as well as the cost impact on radio manufacturers, auto manufacturers and consumers.
