Senator Calls For Limbaugh 'Reprimand' Over Riot Comments
WASHINGTON -- April 28, 2008: Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO) has written to Clear Channel/Rocky Mountain Region SVP Lee Larsen to ask Larsen to "reprimand" Premiere Radio Network-syndicated host Rush Limbaugh over "incendiary comments" on Limbaugh's show last week.
Limbaugh is heard on Clear Channel's KOA-AM in Denver, where the Democratic National Convention will be held in August. According to a transcript on the KOA website, Limbaugh said on his April 24 show, "We need as many ignorant Americans to wake up and find out exactly who the modern-day Democrat Party is, as dominated by the far left in this country. We need that to be seen. Now, I am not inspiring or inciting riots. I'm dreaming. [Singing to the tune of 'White Christmas.] 'I'm dreaming of riots in Denver.'"
Salazar wrote that he read Limbaugh's comments and that they appear to him "to be a clear exhortation that those riots are exactly what [Limbaugh] wants to happen." He continues, "For that kind of incendiary comment, I ask Clear Channel to reprimand Mr. Limbaugh."
The letter goes on, "It is wrong to have political partisans of any stripe suggesting that violence is somehow an acceptable outcome of our political conventions." Salazar says political commentary "should speak to the great strength reflected in the peaceful exercise of democracy" as demonstrated at the national political conventions.
Clear Channel/Denver Director/AM Programming Kris Olinger told the Denver Post that the station has passed the latter along to Premiere and that she doesn't believe Salazar has read the full transcript of Limbaugh's remarks.
Limbaugh reiterated Friday on the air that he was not calling for riots, saying in one conversation with a listener, "Now, do I advocate riots and civil unrest? Hardly. I don't."
