WNEW Returns, On HD And Online

NEW YORK -- April 14, 2008: With CBS Radio VP/Adult Rock Programming Norm Winer at the helm, Rock WNEW is back on the air, as an HD Radio subchannel of AC WWFS/New York at 102.7 HD-2 and online at www.wnew.com.

"As a music fan and radio geek who grew up in Brooklyn listening to the original WNEW," Winer said, "I'm excited to help recapture the spirit and philosophy of progressive radio, using tools we never dreamed of back in the early days. With the foundation of a timeless and totally one-of-a-kind archive, we will provide rock devotees of all generations the chance to hear incredible moments from our collective past and enable them to connect the dots to rock's most compelling artists of the present and future."

The new WNEW will offer listeners "a complete interactive and social networking experience" through the station website and CBS Corp.'s Last.fm, said CBS Radio. Fans can listen to music on demand, join groups, meet fellow listeners, and become part of the station's "staff." These listener staff members will have the chance to participate in the station on-air and on its website through blogs, concert reviews, music forums, and artist profiles.

On the air, WNEW has been "completely updated to reflect its historical influence in today's contemporary rock scene," CBS Radio said, and will offer music from the late '60s through today, along with music from emerging artists. Among the featured artists will be Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, R.E.M, Foo Fighters, the White Stripes, the Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd.

Additionally, the station is offering hourly artist interviews from WNEW's 30-year archive, featuring such former WNEW hosts as Scott Muni, Dave Herman, and Richard Neer talking with artists like John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, and David Bowie. Live performances from WNEW artists are also in the lineup.

Other programming: Interview With an Icon, featuring extended artist interviews from WNEW-FM; Live From the Archives, with vintage performances from the vaults of WNEW and sister stations such as WBCN/Boston and WXRT/Chicago; and Emerging and Amazing, with music from new and unknown artists.

WNEW was Rock until from 1967 until 1999, when it flipped to "Hot Talk." That format folded following the Opie & Anthony blowup in 2002, and, after stretches as "Blink," and "Mix 102.7," WNEW changed its calls and became AC WWFS (Fresh 102.7) in January of 2007.
