Radio Revenue Falls 6 Percent In November
NEW YORK -- January 3, 2008: Radio revenue was down 6 percent in November, the RAB reported Thursday, with local down 5 percent and national off a startling 15 percent after a 7 percent decline in October and an 8 percent dip in September.
Local and national combined for a 7 percent decline in November, but nonspot revenue continued to grow, rising by 14 percent for the month. Nonspot was up 9 percent in both September and October.
The RAB's revenue figures are based on approximately 150 markets as reported by Miller Kaplan Arase & Co.
Wachovia analyst Marci Ryvicker called the decline "significant" and dropped her full-year forecast for the radio industry to down 2.3 percent from down 1.9 percent.
"While political is a small percent of overall radio revenue (at roughly 1 percent to 1.5 percent)," she said, "it makes a big difference in the industry's growth rate given the significant declines in core advertising." Therefore, she said, "2006 political advertising creates a big hurdle in Q4 2007."
Ryvicker is maintaining her 2008 estimate of flat revenue for the industry but added that "this may be aggressive." She said, "Should core ad revenue be weaker than expected, there is risk to our industry and company estimates on 2008."
