Apple To Produce HD Boombox?

SEATTLE -- January 2, 2008: Apple Computer rumor site iLounge is reporting that Apple is ready to introduce iTunes-tagging-capable HD Radio boomboxes at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco later this month.

iTunes tagging works with HD Radio receivers to let users "tag" songs as they play on an HD broadcast. When an iPod is docked with the HD receiver, the tagged songs are added to the iPod as a new playlist. Then, when the iPod is synched with iTunes on a computer, the playlist shows up in iTunes so the songs can be easily previewed and purchased.

The HD signal has to be encoded at the radio station for tagging to work, and Clear Channel, CBS Radio, Cumulus, Cox, Entercom, and Greater Media have all said they're installing the technology.

If Apple does indeed introduce a tagging-capable product at Macworld, it won't be its first venture into the boombox arena: It introduced the Hi-Fi iPod boombox early last year. But, like the iPod itself, that boombox did not include a radio. JBL, Alpine, and Polk Audio are all set to introduce tagging-capable HD receivers soon.

Macworld is set for January 14-18 in San Francisco.
