Clear Channel Encodes For iTunes Song Sales Via HD Radio Polk Audio and JBL have unveiled HD Radio receivers that support Apple's iTunes Tagging technology, which lets listeners tag songs as they play for later purchase from the iTunes Music Store, and Clear Channel has already announced that it will encode all its FM HD broadcasts for the service.
Clear Channel President/CEO John Hogan said, "Apple has been a strong supporter of radio, previously making an FM tuner available for the iPod, and we view their support of HD digital radio as an enormous opportunity." Apple offers the iPod Radio Remote as an iPod accessory for $49.
Hogan continued, "With substantial gains in online and on-demand programming already under our belt, there should now be no doubt of radio's ability to constantly evolve and embrace new technology. The iPod is not a competitor to radio -- it is a collaborator in connecting with consumers on a continual basis."
Polk's I-Sonic Entertainment System 2 and JBL's iHD tabletop entertainment systems feature iPod docks and "iTunes Tag" buttons that lets listeners mark songs as they play in an HD broadcast. The next time an iPod is docked, it receives the tag info, and, when the iPod is next synched with iTunes, the tagged songs show up in a new playlist from which they can be previewed and purchased.
Polk's $499 I-Sonic ES2 is expected to arrive at retail next month. No release date or price info was immediately available for the iHD.
