Bridge Reports On Audience Attrition, Musical Mobiles
Bridge Ratings' on-going study of the audience attrition of traditional radio and subscriber and user growth of alternative digital media projects a 2007 sector increase in satellite radio of 3.9 million subscribers with XM finishing the year with 9.12 million and Sirius with 8.34 total subscribers. As for terrestrial radio, they predict that the weekly cume for traditional radio will slide from its current 94% of the U.S. population in 2007 to 77% by 2020.
Elsewhere in audio entertainment: one in ten mobile subscribers now have music-capable phones.
There are now 23.5 million mobile subscribers in the US who own phones with integrated music players. The number of consumers with music-enabled phones is up five times from the same period in 2005 and nearly 20 percent of the new phones purchased in Q3 2006 were music capable.
While the penetration of U.S. mobile video/TV subscribers is still small at 2.3 percent in Q3 2006, the number of mobile video/TV subscribers has doubled to 5.1 million since the beginning of the year.
