Mike FM’S “Project Backpack” Provides Relief To Students Displaced By Hurricane Katrina

Boston’s 93.7 Mike FM has introduced a program to collect back-to-school supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina who have been evacuated and relocated to the Greater Houston area.

Promos began airing on Mike FM last week, asking listeners to contribute school supplies to be shipped to Harris County, Texas.

According to Harris County Department of Education Superintendent Dr. John Sawyer, “We are grateful for the national outpour of concern and resources as we assist with the Hurricane Katrina education relief effort. These children who have lost their homes, schools and in some case—their loved ones—need to return to some sense of schedule and normality as soon as possible. They are America’s children, and it is our privilege to educate and care for them.”

Steve Jones, program director of Mike FM, said, “We envisioned a few hundred pounds of school supplies that we could easily ship down to Houston. Instead we were overwhelmed with our listeners' generosity and we're faced with far more than we expected. What a great problem to have."
