Did CBS’ Moonves Shoot Self In Foot?
“Regarding your story Tuesday, ‘Moonves On CBS-FM Format Change: ‘It's Like We Shot Someone.’ Brother, that was an understatement! Not only have you destroyed America's greatest oldies station, but you've also taken away the livelihoods of some of New York greatest radio legends. Cousin Brucie, Harry Harrison, Don K. Reed and others too numerous to mention here. For not only have you destroyed 'CBS-FM; you've also destroyed a part of New York's heritage—a 33-year heritage, all for the sake of saving a few bucks and to beat the other station's quest for ‘Jack.’ I could see ‘Jack’-ing K-Rock or WNEW-FM (two very poor excuses of FM stations)—but WCBS-FM!? Man, what kind of weed were you smokin' in that board room?”
“Gee, Les—maybe you should take a lesson. Right or wrong, as far as loyal listeners know- you don't know jack.”
“Les (Moonves) is definitely less.”
“If Les Moonves or his ‘yes men’ had done any real market or demographic research, there should be no surprise as to the reaction of destroying a New York institution. Les and Viacom are completely clueless as to the backlash against Viacom and its advertisers this is causing and will continue to cause. The Dan Rather/60 Minutes nonsense is tame compared to this. Go to www.Musicradio77.com and read the special WCBS-FM/Jack special posting pages for an indication of the public outcry.”
“Is Infinity crazy? I mean, really—the Beastie Boys? The ‘oldies’-era and everything about it is iconic and irreplaceable. We were privileged to have grown up in such a wonderful, innocent and uncomplicated time. I have been listening to Cousin Brucie since I am 13 years old, on my first Motorola transistor radio 46 years ago. And I still listen to him and the other "oldies" DJs. The only reason I would listen to "Jack" is to find out who the sponsors are so that I don't use them. Brucie said he'll be back? We're waiting for you cousin. Let's rock 'n roll!”
“What has happened to Micky Dolenz in the morning? I'm outraged that he, Mike Fitzgerald and Brucer the Producer have disappeared overnight. Friday morning they were at BB King's celebrating the 100th show and Monday morning they're gone. They've been replaced with noise. How can this happen? Of course, when I tried calling the radio station, I could only leave a voice mail. I do hope this major error is soon corrected. There's enough noise in my day without having to wake up to it. Mickey, Mike and Brucer always had my laughing, learning and I faced the day with a smile on my face. Bring them back now!”
“We all hate this new show. I want to know the phone number for Infinity so I can tell them. I hope you can help me.”
