Greater Media Commits All Stations To Be On-Air In HD By Year-End 2005
Greater Media, Inc. has announced that all of its 19 stations will be broadcasting in HD by the end of 2005.
HD Radio from iBiquity Digital Corp. enables radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally, thereby providing listeners with radically improved audio quality and reception along with new wireless data services.
All five Boston Greater Media stations are presently broadcasting in HD Radio, including WMJX, WROR, WBOS, WKLB and WTKK. In Philadelphia, WMWX and WPEN are presently on the air broadcasting HD Radio, with WMMR scheduled for early 2005.
In Detroit, WMGC has been broadcasting HD Radio for the past several years as part of Greater Media’s partnership with iBiquity. WRIF is installing equipment now for a conversion to HD Radio technology in January of 2005 and WCSX will follow shortly afterwards. WDHA in New Jersey is the first of the seven Greater Media properties in that area to broadcast in HD Radio, with the remaining stations to come on air within the year.
Peter Smyth, President and CEO of Greater Media observed, "HD Radio is an investment in the future of our medium, especially in-car listening. I have HD in my car, and it's just amazing when the music surrounds you; it's a whole new quality of experience. Superior sound, coupled with the information that we can display on the dashboard, will allow us to provide all our Greater Media listeners with vastly improved entertainment...and we do it for free! Greater Media has been partnering with iBiquity since HD Radio was in the lab; we've been their testing partner at our station in Detroit, and now that HD Radio is being adopted by the radio industry, we will continue to partner with them and encourage receiver manufacturers to put HD Radio in every car in the country."
