Lisa Miller - "How I Got Into Radio"
Premiere Networks' Julie Talbott
The best part of any business is when you have the opportunity to work with someone you not only admire, but consider a friend. This for me is Julie Talbott. When we first met, we discovered that we had both worked under the direction of Gene DeWitt -- Julie at BBD&O, me at McCann Erickson. Gene expected the best of everyone and guided his people with respect and high expectations. Anyone who worked with Gene knew this and to reach well beyond the expected. No one who worked for Gene was average, they were exceptional. And that describes Julie Talbott, “exceptional.” She puts 30 hours in every day, the sun shines when it’s raining, negatives are positives, and problems are only solutions to be applied; that’s the Julie Talbott I know. Working with Julie has been an honor and to call her my friend is a gift.
Now here's President, Content & Affiliate Relations Premiere Networks Julie Talbott telling us how she got into radio…
I moved to New York right after college and was working for BBDO Advertising. The company was loaded with a great cast of characters and it was the coolest job I could imagine (keep in mind that I came to New York from Kentucky for a bank training program, so cool is relative.)
I digress…. The agency had a new disposable razor roll-out targeting a young male demo, so we wanted the brand to be associated with appropriate programming. There was a heavy supply of TV and print ideas, but we needed to look for more ways to target men 18-34.
I was a listener of WNEW-FM in New York and they had a feature called "Rock Quiz." When we called the station, they said it was a network feature from Josh Feigenbaum’s MJI Broadcasting. I tracked Josh down and, for my first meeting with him, he walked in wearing blue jeans and a casual attitude to match, which was funny at the time because it was the early ‘80s and everyone’s work attire was more formal -- picture women wearing big scarf bowties and blue blazers. We brainstormed and he had a million great ideas for the product. After spending so much time working with TV and print, I couldn’t believe how creative radio could be in helping us achieve our goals.
Advertising is clearly about selling product in the right environment, and I realized I wanted to be in an environment that could respond quickly with focused ideas for product positioning and sales. I joined Josh with five people at the company. We grew the company to 150 people, always focusing on client needs. We were bought by Premiere 18 years later. And the rest is history…..
