NPR Gets Ready to Move Into New Digs

After about 20 years on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., NPR will relocate to its new headquarters in stages starting next month. The new building is located on North Capitol Street, a designated business improvement district. Construction began three years ago and was completed in December. The final touches to the inside are being made this month. Staff will get training on new broadcast and digital equipment and the move should be complete by April.

NPR President and CEO Garry Knell said, Our new headquarters sets the stage for public radios next leap forward. Today, NPR is an essential source of national and international news and cultural programming for millions of radio listeners, and increasingly for those who rely on mobile and web platforms. We are confident that, working in partnership with our Member stations, we will set the standard for the next generation of journalism and audio storytelling from this new home.

The heart of the building is a two-story open newsroom with broadcast and production studios to accommodate NPRs round-the-clock schedule. NPRs news, music, programming and digital staff are co-located on these floors. In addition to serving as center for NPRs operations, the building is also home to the Public Radio Satellite System, an independent distribution system that moves public radio content across the country.
