WIBC's Big John Gillis Dies At 64

Long-time WIBC (Indianapolis) traffic reporter Big John Gillis died Friday at his home at the age of 64. He was having breathing problems in recent weeks and his body shut down Friday. Emmis Indianapolis Market Manager Charlie Morgan tells Radio Ink, "John was truly a bigger-than-life personality. He was more than just a traffic reporter, he was a part of the fabric of WIBC and the Indianapolis community. He was beloved by WIBC listeners and will be missed by all who listened to him, worked with him, or knew him."

Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan added, "WIBC and the entire Emmis family are saddened by the passing of Big John Gillis. John was an icon in Central Indiana whose captivating personality touched generations of listeners in our community. John will be missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Sherry and his entire family."

John was PD at WVBF, Boston in '74 when I got hired there. Too bad he left shortly thereafter. He was a really nice guy.
