Digital Music Sales on Pace to Break Record

10-3-2012

According to Nielson digital music sales for 2012 are already up 15% over 2011. One billion digital songs have already been purchased. In 2011 a total of 1.3 billion records were sold. Nielson says the explosion of devices, including the smartphone and tablets, and how they are becoming more a part of daily life, is a big reason for the digital music growth.

Nielson says in 2004, digital made up less than 1% of U.S. album sales. By 2009, that number jumped to nearly 40%. Senior Vice president of Client Development at Nielson, David Bakula says, "As we look ahead, it’s clear that digital music purchases—and consumption through streaming sources—will continue to grow, and that consumers’ appetites for digital music will change at the speed of technology. These trends will no doubt continue to shape the way that music is discovered, marketed, consumed and sold.”
