Radio Loses Contributors, Voices & Legends In ’09
December 28, 2009: In addition to Inner City founder Percy Sutton and MusicRadio WABC night jock George Michael, radio also lost some major voices and contributors in 2009. They include:
* Former Talk Radio WABC New York personality George Weber, who, sadly, was found stabbed to death in his Brooklyn apartment in March. The radio news anchor was 58 at the time of his death.
* George Taylor Morris, a former New York FM Radio host who was, at the time of his death, working for XM Satellite Radio as host / producer of the Rock themed program, "Reelin' in the Years.” Morris died of throat cancer at 62.
* CBS-TV & Radio newsman Walter Cronkite. Not to toss the word “legend” around lightly, but among Cronkite’s contributions via American media was helping to bring Israel’s Begin and Egypt’s Sadat together, along with changing America’s opinion of the Vietnam war.
* While Michael Jackson was never a radio personality, he almost single handedly provided the Pop soundtrack of the ‘80s.
* We lost a beloved “one-hit-wonder” in Patrick Swayze this year. Swayze, got radio airplay with his ‘80s hit “She’s Like The Wind,” but he was much better known as an actor/dancer who appeared in films like “Ghost” and “Dirty Dancing,” movies that contributed major music for radio airplay.
*And of course, the legendary Paul Harvey, whose final “Good day” was on February 28, when he passed away at age 90.

(12/28/2009 2:55:52 PM) you forgot Philadelphia legends lost in 2009: Steve Friedman (aka "Mr Movie"), whose Saturday-night movie call-in talk show was heard in 30 states on 1210 AM; Irv Homer, the populist talk show host who was heard on WWDB-FM & other stations from the 1970s to 2009; and of course, Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster (and baseball Hall of Fame member) Harry Kalas. |
