Emmis Leaves Hungary, Will Sue Over Slager Loss

November 23, 2009: Emmis Communications says it is leaving the Hungarian radio industry after being denied a license renewal for Slager Radio. Emmis lost the license after a dozen years when the Hungarian National Radio and Television Board awarded the frequency to a politically aligned group. Hungary's only other national radio license was also awarded to a group believed to be close to a political party. The head of the Radio and Television Board resigned over the license awards.
Emmis will not fight for the license, but will sue for damages in Hungarian and EU courts, Reuters reports. The radio decisions have brought widespread response, including a warning by diplomats from nine countries about "non-transparent behavior" that could discourage foreign investment. Additionally, a U.S. House resolution has been introduced condemning the license awards.
The loss of Slager represents a significant financial blow for Emmis; the station brought in $23.9 million in the year ended February 28, 2009, the company earlier reported in an SEC filing.
