MMTC, SBA Want To Be Heard On Royalties
November 12, 2009: Minority Media and Telecommunications Council Exec. Director David Honig and Spanish Broadcasters Association Director Frank Montero have written to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) to ask that their organizations be represented at a discussion on the Performance Rights Act set for November 17. Leahy and Conyers are strong backers of performance royalties for broadcast radio, and the bill to impose those royalties has passed in both their committees.
Honig and Montero write, "As this legislation will have a significant impact on minority radio broadcasters, we would ask that the Minority Media Telecommunications Council and Spanish Broadcasters Association also be included in these conversations."
Already invited to the discussion are NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith and representatives of pro-royalties lobbying group MusicFirst. Reps. Gene Green and Mike Conaway, the original sponsors of the anti-royalties resolution known as the Local Radio Freedom Act, have also asked to be allowed to take part.
