Radio Covers Jackson Memorial

LOS ANGELES -- July 7, 2009: A memorial service was held for Michael Jackson at Los Angeles' Staples Center Tuesday, and radio continued to pay tribute to the pop star, who died June 25 at age 50.
Along with on-air and online memorials, Clear Channel Radio aired a one-hour pre-show from WKTU/New York and a commercial-free audio feed of the memorial service. Some station websites also offered coverage, and the pre-show and tribute aired on a special Michael Jackson Memorial channel on Clear Channel's iheartradio website and mobile application. Encores of the shows will run on the iheartradio channel throughout the week.
Sirius XM Radio also aired live reports and updates from the memorial service on its '70s on 7, '80s on 8, Heat, Heart & Soul, and other music channels. The satcaster's CNN and Fox News channels also carried live tribute coverage. Additionally, the '80s on 8 channel was set to air the special "Michael Jackson: Reflections" on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Local radio stations, meanwhile, continued to take listener calls and offer other tributes. Among the reports: KHYL(V101.1)/Sacramento, which hosted a candlelight vigil for Jackson June 26, played Jackson's music all morning before airing Clear Channel's coverage of the memorial service, while Radio One's WKYS in DC invited listeners to gather at an area bar Tuesday morning to watch the service and streamed the event on its website. In Columbus, GA, Davis Broadcasting's stations was set to host a candlelight vigil Tuesday night, while Clear Channel was among the sponsors of a citywide vigil.
