WSJ Radio Network Thrives As Paper's Circulation Rises

NEW YORK -- April 27, 2009: The Wall Street Journal is seeing a "strong increase" in individual paid subscriptions, parent company Dow Jones reports, and is the only U.S. newspaper among the top 25 whose circulation is growing, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Individually paid circulation has risen by more than 2.8 percent over the past six months.

Other paid circulation was down, "consistent with the Journal's strategy of focusing on the highest-quality circulation," while revenue per subscriber rose 13 percent. Electronic editions rose by 8.8 percent, and total average paid circulation grew 0.6 percent, to 2.08 million from 2.07 million.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal Radio Network is continuing to grow, Dow Jones reports, adding 55 new affiliates in the past year. More than 350 stations are now running WSJ programming, which includes The Wall Street Journal Report, The Wall Street Journal This Morning, The Wall Street Journal This Weekend, and the newly launched "Watching Your Wallet" feature.

"As radio listeners try to make sense of the turmoil in the economy, the demand for high-quality, authoritative business news and information from the Journal continues to grow," said Wall Street Journal Radio Network Exec. Director Nancy Abramson.

"These results confirm subscribers continue to recognize the increasing value of their Journal subscription, especially as other newspapers reduce coverage and distribution during this turbulent economic downturn," Dow Jones & Co. Consumer Media Group Chief Marketing Officer Paul Bascober said. "The Journal continues to invest in our products, delivery platforms, and news coverage to serve our readers and build our engaged audience for advertisers."
