Report: No Decision Yet On Harvey's Successor

NEW YORK -- March 3, 2009: The death of Paul Harvey leaves three daily time slots to be filled by ABC Radio Networks, but ABCRN spokesman Louis Allen tells the New York Daily News that no long-term plans have yet been made. He said, "We will discuss this with Paul [Harvey] Jr. when the time is appropriate.

The younger Harvey regularly wrote the long-running "Rest of the Story" feature and has been filling in for his father on some of the daily morning and afternoon newscasts.

Allen tells the paper, "There's no replacing Paul Harvey. But ABC is working with the Paul Harvey affiliates concerning their needs. We have a lot of programming in our portfolio."

If Paul Harvey Jr. were to take over full-time, that would represent a rare generation-to-succession, in the vein of New York's Gambling family, who enjoyed a 75-year run on WOR/New York with John B., John A. Gambling, and John R. Gambling. (John R. appeared on crosstown WABC from 2000-2008 but is now in mornings on WOR.)

For this week, ABCRN is fill the "News & Comment," noon report, and "Rest of the Story" with special tributes to Paul Harvey focusing on different aspects of his career. The funeral for Harvey, who died February 28 at age 90, is set for Saturday in Chicago.
